This post was not the planned post of the day. It was inspired by what I have been seeing on social media lately. Whether it is Facebook, Instagram or YouTube it is super easy to pick and choose the snapshots of your life to share with the world. When the phrase “Fake it till you make it” came about I don’t believe people knew what the internet would do to it. Here are a couple examples of how “Fake it till you make it” can go wrong.

You Get Caught
This is the #1 way it can go wrong. It may be the only reason I list. Whether you are pretending your team is bigger than it is or that you possess skills or equipment that you don’t have when you get caught the jig is up. A lot of what gets faked are things that potential clients actually don’t care about. The main reason for faking is for us to feel better about our own insecurities. Do not underestimate your prospect. If you’re insecure about your skills, the size of your team or any part of your business they may already know the truth about what you’re choosing to fake and that is how you lose trust. People don’t give business to people they don’t trust.

You Haven’t Defined the “Make it” part
One of the most important keys to success is having a defined goal in mind and a plan on how to get there. I wrote about this in a previous blog here. Without a clear goal in mind, you really haven’t defined what making it is. Making it looks different for everyone and only you can decide what that means to you.

The one thing you can learn from your faking is that you have a general idea of what you want out of life and your business. Now time to put a plan together and get what you want… for real
