I was never really a big fan of the Golden Rule. What gave me the right to determine how other should be treated. It also assumes that I want to be treated well. By this rule, if you didn’t care about how you were treated then it doesn’t matter how you treat others! During my time as a youth worker, I came across the platinum rule and I have lived by it since.

The Platinum Rule
Treat others the way they want to be treated. My favorite part about the platinum rule is the fact that it takes into account the individuals feelings. How do you do this? It is simple you listen. Whenever you are working with others whether they are potential clients, current clients or while you’re networking take the time to really understand what they are saying, feeling and doing. People want to be heard. People want to be treated right. If you are still having trouble figuring out how the other person wants to be treated just simply ask.
